Racist Graffiti At College Sparked Protests, Now The Truth Has Emerged About The Perpetrator

Albion College in Michigan finally located the student responsible for the racist graffiti targeting Black and Jewish people.

According to MLive, the college and campus police announced that a 21-year-old Black student had been brought in for questioning.

The college announced that the student had been identified in an April 7 Facebook post, but did not mention his race.

The post read in part: “But we know the acts of racism that have occurred this week are not about one particular person or one particular incident. We know that there is a significant history of racial pain and trauma on campus and we are taking action to repair our community. We will change and heal together as a community, because we are committed to doing the work.”

The graffiti, found on April 2, read: “Albion is racist … we do exist KKK,” “Die [n-word] Please!”; “KKK white power,” and included a Jewish star with the number 666 written on it, MLive reported.

Photos of the graffiti were shared on Facebook by City Watch News Group.

According to the college newspaper, The Albion Pleiad, Albion President Mathew Johnson identified the student as a “current student of color,” in an email. He added that the student had been placed on temporary suspension during the investigation.

Campus officials maintained that the student had acted alone, and had admitted that he was responsible. Police revealed that campus video surveillance confirmed his statement, The Albion Pleiad reported.

Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office has yet to announce whether any criminal charges will be filed against the student.

In January, Matthew made news after he sent out an email to the college community describing the George Floyd protests as “peaceful activism in communities around the country.” He shared the sentiment as he compared the Floyd riots to the U.S. Capitol riots, The Police Tribune reported.

The email read, “Yesterday’s actions were an attack on the very fabric of our democracy and unfortunately were not a one-off. Rather, they were the logical culmination of a prolonged campaign to undermine our democracy and a clear display of white supremacy.”

“Yesterday’s actions also stand in stark contrast to a summer of peaceful activism in communities around the country demanding accountability and change in policing systems that lead to police killings of Black people. While we stand to condemn the actions yesterday, we simultaneously condemn the very disparate actions taken against unarmed peaceful Black and Brown protestors,” he added.

Following the discovery of the racist graffiti, students at the college began protesting the racial injustice.

They “boycotted” classes last week, WWMT reported.

The protests are being held during midterm week, with students maintaining that they can’t be expected to focus on midterms while they are fighting against racial injustice.

“I’m tired of having to do these things. I wish I could get up like a regular kid, go to class, come home and do homework, but that’s not my reality,” a boycott organizer told WWMT.
