Last week, a social media post showed a vehicle with California plates reading “ASN FLU,” with a Trump sticker placed on the rear window above the plate.

The license plate sparked outrage on social media, as during his term, former President Donald Trump routinely bashed China for “unleashing” coronavirus, and with other Republican officials, peddled terms like “China virus,” “Chinese virus,” “Chinese flu” and “Kung Flu,” when talking about the virus.

During the pandemic, there has been an increase in attacks against Asian Americans, with nearly 3,800 cases reported by national coalition Stop AAPI Hate between March 19, 2020 and Feb. 28, 2021.

This surge in attacks became headline news in the past weeks, with stories including the 27-year-old man arrested in New York for assaulting three Asian Americans in one month.

California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) told AsAm News that the application for the “ASNFLU” license was approved in 2006, but couldn’t explain why the license was granted because the application is no longer available.

“The DMV currently does not have the authority to cancel this type of plate due to the court ruling in the Ogilvie case,” a DMV spokesperson said.

A U.S. District Court ruled In November that the DMV cannot ban what it considers “offensive to good taste and decency” because of the First Amendment. AsAm News reported that the California DMV is evaluating its available options and that more information may be available soon.

For now, the owner of the vehicle will not face any repercussions.

One person commented on Instagram: “People like this aren’t just ignorant, but they actively spread hate. Hate which has led to the surge in violence against Asians. If you know someone who thinks this is OK, please say something. Let’s stand together, educate those that will listen and embrace those that support.”
