On Thursday night, Wheel of Fortune baffled its host, Pat Sajak, and its viewers following what was described as a “kinky” Italian sausage answer.

Contestant Adam Goodell advanced to the bonus round after he correctly guessed the phrase:  “Brushing up on my Italian sausage.”

The show, which debuted in 1975, requires contestants to solve hangman-style word puzzles to win cash and other prizes, which are decided by a large carnival wheel spin.

Goodell had found a number of letters when he was left with the clue: "BR-S-ING -- ON -- ITALIAN SA-SAGE."

After he got the phrase correct, Sajak looked surprised.

“Uh…it’s a grilling expression," Sajak explained.

At-home viewers took to social media to share their bewilderment and amusement at the solution.

“I found the ‘Brushing up on my Italian sausage’ puzzle on #WheelofFortune tonight hilarious for some reason!” one person wrote.

“‘Brushing up on my Italian sausage’ may be one of the most lurid-sounding #WheelofFortune puzzles ever," another commented.

“Bruh what intern must [have] made the puzzle ‘brushing up on my Italian sausage’ I’m dead,” someone else wrote.

This is not the show’s first time garnering attention for its baffling answers.

Teacher Jessie Rebhan won $37,000 last week after she correctly guessed a phrase when she only had four of its 13 letters.

She had been provided with the letters R, S, T, L, N, E and only guessed the letter C correctly.

She got the incomplete phrase, "----N- - ---CER", and the clue "What are you doing?"

Sajak told her, "It looks daunting to me, but you have 10 seconds, keep talking," upon seeing the board.

With only five seconds remaining, Rebhan guessed, "Buying a juicer," which turned out to be the correct answer.

Sajak looked into the camera and said: "I don't understand this game!"
