Popular Dog Treats Recalled Due To Possible Contamination

Three brands have recalled popular pet treats due to a possible contamination with Salmonella bacteria.

According to PoisonedPets, Barnsdale Farms, HoundsTooth, and Mac's Choice have announced the recall of their pig ear dog treats. The three brands sold pig ears manufactured by EuroCan Pet Products.

The pig ears were distributed by the three brands throughout the U.S. and Canada. Routine testing revealed the presence of Salmonella in the pig ears. EuroCan Pet Products has suspended the distribution of the product as the company and the FDA continue investigating the issue. As of yet, no illnesses have been attributed to the potentially contaminated treats.

According to the FDA's official statement regarding the case, the voluntary recall affects 6-packs, 12-packs and 25-packs of the pig ear brands in question. Customers who have purchased pig ears treats under recall can take the treats back to the point of purchase for a refund.

The FDA's statement also noted that Salmonella is a danger for both the animals who eat contaminated products and the humans who handle those products, and went on to discuss warning signs of Salmonella infection for both humans and pets:

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare provider.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

According to the CDC, approximately 1 million Americans become sick from Salmonella per year. In most cases, the symptoms go away on their own, but the bacterium does lead to about 19,000 hospital visits per year and is fatal in approximately 380 cases per year.
